Wattier places in Conference Championships
On Saturday, Feb. 23, the Wayne State College track and field athletes attended the 2024 Northern Sun Conference Championships at Myers Fieldhouse in Mankato, MN. In prelims, sophomore Keaton Wattier advanced to Saturday's final of the 60-meter hurdles with the No. 6 qualifying time of 8.17 seconds to eclipse his previous record of 8.19 seconds set last month at the Mark Schuck Open in Mankato.

Annual state chicken, egg numbers reported
LINCOLN – Nebraska’s layer numbers during 2023 averaged 7.50 million, up 8% from 2022, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The annual average production per layer on hand in 2023 was 298 eggs, up 3% from 2022.

‘Nebraska Stories’ unveils bronze statue of Willa Cather in national statuary hall
LINCOLN – Stories about an Omaha barista rocking the world of specialty coffee, a Nebraska Volleyball player’s heartfelt tribute to her father and the reveal of the 7-foot bronze statue of Nebraska author Willa Cather in the United States Capitol are featured in March broadcasts of the award-wining, local television series “Nebraska Stories.”

LINCOLN – For the week ending Feb. 25, 2024, topsoil moisture supplies rated 7% very short, 30% short, 61% adequate, and 2% surplus, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 10% very short, 41% short, 48% adequate, and 1% surplus.

Mike Trader basketball camps to be held
Mike Trader’s Annual Mid-America Basketball Camp will conduct eight individual sessions this summer. The overnight and commuter camps for boys and girls will be held June 30-July 3 at Central Community College (Platte Campus) in Columbus and July 8-11 at Doane University.

LINCOLN – Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.55 million cattle on feed on Feb. 1, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. This inventory was down 1% from last year.

Osmond-Randolph Hawks season ends in subdistricts
HARTINGTON – On Tuesday, Feb. 20, the Osmond-Randolph Hawks took on the Cedar Catholic Trojans in the first round of subdistrict play at Hartington Cedar Catholic. The Trojans showed why they are one of the top ranked teams in Class C2, and took down the Hawks in convincing fashion, Senior Xander Brown led O-R in scoring with 10 points, all of which came in the first half. Logan Lienemann came next with 8 points, and freshman Ryan Engel scored 5. Owen Severson knocked down a 3 for his only points of the night, and Baylen Guenther rounded out the scoring with a free throw.
