‘Nebraska Stories’ unveils bronze statue of Willa Cather in national statuary hall

LINCOLN – Stories about an Omaha barista rocking the world of specialty coffee, a Nebraska Volleyball player’s heartfelt tribute to her father and the reveal of the 7-foot bronze statue of Nebraska author Willa Cather in the United States Capitol are featured in March broadcasts of the award-wining, local television series “Nebraska Stories.”

LINCOLN – Stories about an Omaha barista rocking the world of specialty coffee, a Nebraska Volleyball player’s heartfelt tribute to her father and the reveal of the 7-foot bronze statue of Nebraska author Willa Cather in the United States Capitol are featured in March broadcasts of the award-wining, local television series “Nebraska Stories.”

Episodes premiere at 8 p.m. CT, Thursdays, March 14, 21 and 28 on Nebraska Public Media.

The March 14 episode introduces collectors preserving Oregon Trail relics, some of the world’s fastest cars, Husker football mementos and memorabilia from the band KISS.

On March 21, the series travels to Omaha where national champion barista Isaiah Sheese wants to be the best in the world of specialty coffee. In Lincoln, Husker volleyball player Harper Murry explains the significance of the number 27 on her jersey and tattooed on her finger. Plus, meet an animal communicator helping nonprofits resolve questions about animals in their care.

On March 28, the last episode of the month takes viewers to National Statuary Hall for the unveiling of the 7-foot bronze statue of the Nebraska author Willa Cather created by Omaha sculptor Littleton Alston.

The episode also includes stories about a couple who bond over a shared love of football as they sit in Memorial Stadium seats that have been in the family for 90 years; the collection of fossils, arrowheads and petrified wood sculptures amassed by twin brothers in Ogallala; and a story about the man who converted the theater in Lyons into his own sci-fi movie studio.

The masterful storytellers who work on “Nebraska Stories” serve as the modern archivists of Nebraska’s stories – both present and past. Enjoyed by viewers across the state for its feature-based, character-driven storytelling, “Nebraska Stories” covers art, science, history, sports, performance, nature and more.

New episodes repeat Fridays at 7:30 p.m. CT on Nebraska Public Media. “Nebraska Stories” is funded in part by The Margaret and Martha Thomas Foundation and the Bill Harris and MarySue Hormel Harris Fund for the Presentation of Cultural Programming.

The series is also funded in part by the Nebraska Soybean Board, the Nebraska Tourism Commission, Phelps Memorial Health Center and TeamMates Mentoring Program.
