Nebraska crop progress, condition reported
LINCOLN - For the week ending Aug. 18, 2024, there were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statis - tics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 9% very short, 31% short, 56% adequate, and 4% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 10% very short, 32% short, 54% adequate, and 4% surplus.

Dove hunting season opens September 1
With the annual dove season opener on Sept. 1, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has some reminders for hunters, as well as recommendations for areas to hunt.

Commissioners approve bighorn sheep season; other changes
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission approved a 2025 bighorn sheep hunting season at its Aug. 16 meeting at Fort Robinson State Park near Crawford.

2024 Nebraska acreage reported
LINCOLN – Nebraska producers planted 10.1 million acres of corn for all purposes, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. This is up 2% from last year. Of the total acres, 96% were planted with biotechnology varieties, up 2 percentage points from 2023. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 9.70 million acres, up 2% from a year ago.

Kumm is grand champion in air rifle competition
Nickolas Kumm, who will be a freshman this fall at Osmond High School, competed in the junior division shotgun and .22 rifle competition at the Knox County fair on Saturday, Aug. 3. He earned a red ribbon in shotgun competi- tion and a red ribbon on his .22 rifle shooting, using only iron sights in that competition.
