Considered one of the most serious perennial weed species, leafy spurge is threatening millions of acres of pasture and rangeland in the western United States. It is one of the most persistent and difficult to control pe rennial weeds yet encountered. The acreage infested with leafy spurge has increased at an alarming rate.

FIRST AT YANKTON
FIRST AT YANKTON - The Osmond Marching Tigers finished in first place in Class D at the March to the Meridian parade at Yankton on Saturday, October 12. Band director Christalin Ginn praised the students, saying, "What an incredible achievement for our talented group! A huge thank you to our amazing seniors for leading the way and guiding us through a season where we placed in every parade we participated in. Your dedication and passion have truly inspired us all! We also want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the parents, bus drivers, and students who played a vital role in making this marching season not just successful but unforgettable. Your support, hard work, and teamwork made all the difference! Let's keep celebrating our accomplishments together as we look forward to more musical adventures ahead!" The Marching Tigers also placed first in Class D at the Columbus Marching Festival on September 28, and placed third in Class D in the Harvest of Harmony parade in Grand Island on October 5.

Vikings fall to Crofton Warriors
CROFTON – Friday Oct. 11, found the Wausa-Osmond Vikings on the road to face the Crofton Warriors, who are favored to win the district outright. It was a beautiful night for football and perhaps the last before the real cold starts setting in.

Crop progress and condition reported
LINCOLN – For the week ending Oct. 6, 2024, there were 6.9 days suit- able for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 36% very short, 40% short, 23% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 30% very short, 43% short, 26% adequate, and 1% surplus.

State’s crop production report released
LINCOLN – Based on Oct. 1 conditions, Nebraska’s 2024 corn production is forecast at 1.90 billion bushels, up 10% from last year’s production, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Area to be harvested for grain, at 9.70 million acres, is up 2% from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 196 bushels per acre, up 14 bushels from last year. If realized, this would be a new record high for both production and yield.

St. Mary’s to host tavern drive-through
OSMOND – St. Mary’s Elementary School is planning a tavern drive-through on Friday, Oct. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the school. Menu includes tavern or hot dog, chips and dessert. Proceeds of the meal will go toward student education.
