Special session ends with slight decrease
The Legislature concluded the special session that was called to relieve property taxes on Tuesday, August20.Afteracontentiousstart, senators agreed to compromise on legislation that will frontload the Nebraska Property Tax Incentive Act credits from LB1107 (2020) directly onto taxpayer’s property tax statements, trim and adjust the state budget by $185 million, and tighten existing property tax levy caps for counties, cities, villages to the greater of inflation or 0 percent. Of the 81 bills and 24 resolutions introduced, only 4 became law. All four bills that were given final approval will go into effect upon the governor’s signature.

Several things with consider with the irrigating season coming to an end
With the 2024 irrigation season coming to an end, it is a good idea to consider things that can be done before next year to make irrigation management more efficient. A few things to consider when turning off your pivots for the year: an end-of-the-year checklist so that the pivot equipment is stored properly and is ready for the spring, any possible modifications that could be made to your system, and possible cost-share programs that could benefit your irrigation time and efficiency. Considering these recommendations can help conserve and manage water resources.

Funds available to establish buffer strip
The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) has funding available through the Nebraska Buffer Strip Program to assist landowners in establishing buffer strips. A buffer strip provides an area between a stream and crop ground to maximize the filtration of water from rain events, allowing suspended sediment and chemicals to drop out before reaching surface water bodies.
