TeamMates of Wausa recognizes mentor-mentee matches

WAUSA – The TeamMates Mentoring Program of Wausa considered its annual mentor-mentee recognition event a mission accomplished.

WAUSA – The TeamMates Mentoring Program of Wausa considered its annual mentor-mentee recognition event a mission accomplished.

The chapter recognized its 2023-24 mentor- mentee matches on Feb. 6 as Wausa’s high school basketball teams hosted Hartington-Newcastle.

“Wow, what a great turnout we had for our recognition,” said Chris Johnson, TeamMates of Wausa’s program coordinator. “A big thank you, thank you, thank you to all those who attended. We were again able to stretch across the gym floor as the matches were introduced. It was an awesome sight to see so many matches and being thanked for all their hard work.”

During National Mentoring Month in January, the chapter had a little drawing for those participating. Each mentor-mentee was asked why do you they TeamMates.

Mentor JoAnn Kumm was the winner of a coffee cup. She stated she loves getting to know students better and following them as they grow. She also gave a thank you to the teachers who are so cooperative.

Mentee Oliver was the winner of a TeamMates travel mug. What he loves about TeamMates is he gets to play chess with his mentor.

Along with recognizing the mentor-mentee matches, TeamMates of Wausa held its annual “Chuck the Duck” contest during halftime of the varsity boys’ basketball game.

“This is always a fun event for everyone to finish off our night,” Johnson said.

During the end of January through the start of February, the chapter tried a new fundraiser by selling popcorn from a company out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and sold 101 bags and made $245.35 in proceeds.

“At this time, we would like to thank anyone who purchased a bag, two or three, and helped support our chapter,” Johnson said. “If you did not purchase popcorn, but gave a monetary donation, that was very much appreciated, also, thank you. As our chapter grows, we are in need of more funds to help pay for scholarships, activities and items for the matches to have available for their meetings.”

If people are interested in becoming a mentor, they may register online at teammates.org or contact Johnson at WausaTeammates2019@gmail. com or any of TeamMates of Wausa’s board members.

“We would love to have you on our team,” Johnson said. “Just ‘Be There!’”
