Nebraska hog inventory down 5%

LINCOLN – Nebraska inventory of all hogs and pigs on March 1, 2025, was 3.55 million head, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Sta- tistics Service. This was down 5% from March 1, 2024, but unchanged from December 1, 2024. Breeding hog inventory, at 410,000 head, was up 3% from March 1, 2024, but down 5% from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 3.14 million head, was down 6% from last year, but up 1% from last quarter. The December 2024 – February 2025 Nebraska pig crop, at 2.12 million head, was down 8% from 2024. Sows farrowed during the period totaled 180,000 head, down 5% from last year. The average pigs saved per litter was 11.80 for the December – February period, compared to 12.10 last year. Nebraska hog producers intend to farrow 185,000 sows during the March – May 2025 quarter, up 6% from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago. Intended farrowings for June – August 2025 are 190,000 sows, unchanged from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago.
