LINCOLN – On Chadron’s north side, the Olde Main Street Inn and the 77 Longbranch Saloon welcome tired, hungry and thirsty guests. The March 20 episode of Nebraska Public Media’s award-winning, local television series “Nebraska Stories” reveals the history of the gathering place and community treasure.
This month, “Nebraska Stories” episodes air on television at 8 p.m. CT on Thursday, March 20 and 27 on Nebraska Public Media.
The building has seen many owners and incarnations in its time, serving as a base of operations for the U.S. Army during the American Indian Wars, housing rail crews, the Railroad YMCA recreation center, a hotel, a lounge popular with Chadron State College students, a restaurant and even a controversial night spot.
It’s also a gathering place for old and new friends, including descendants of proprietors, guests like Dick Cavett, and those making sweet milestone memories.
This all-new story from Chadron premieres March 20, along with others about the Kiewit Luminarium in Omaha and a Seward native who became a record-breaking axe thrower.
The March 27 episode is dedicated to art, with stories about an Art Farm near Marquette, a whimsical roadside attraction made from car parts in Grand Island and an artist who transformed a school in Chester into her studio.
The masterful storytellers who work on “Nebraska Stories” travel statewide, serving as the modern archivists of Nebraska’s stories – both present and past. Enjoyed by viewers across the state for its feature-based, characterdriven storytelling, “Nebraska Stories” covers art, science, history, sports, performance, nature and more.
New episodes repeat Fridays at 7:30 p.m. CT on Nebraska Public Media.
