OSMOND — On Thursday night, Feb. 13, the Tigers would face Wausa in the final game of the regular season. The Tigers found themselves in foul trouble within the first minute of the game but still managed to rally together and kept the score close.
Despite having starters have to sit due to foul trouble, Osmond trailed by only one point at the end of the first quarter, 10-11.
Both teams matched each other in the second period as each team scored 11 points, again despite the Tigers being in foul trouble. Wausa would hold a 22-21 lead going into the locker rooms for halftime. Osmond used a solid defensive third quarter and held Wausa to only 2 points in the quarter as the Tigers were able to take the lead heading into the final quarter, up 27-24.
The first possession of the fourth quarter saw Wausa knock down a 3-point basket to tie the game up at
27 all. The rest of the quarter would go back and forth leading to an excit -
ing finish.
A Sophia Gansebom basket with under 30 seconds left in the game gave the Tigers a 37-36 lead. However a foul on the defensive end would send Taylor Dawson to the free throw line for Wausa with two shots and only 14 seconds left. Dawson would make both free throws to take a 38-37 lead for Wausa.
As Gansebom was bringing the ball down the court, Carrie Kumm got fouled and went to the free throw line for two shots.
Kumm missed both shots but Osmond got the rebound and after a Wausa deflection the ball rolled out of bounds. With 6.4 seconds left on the clock Osmond had a baseline out of bounds play for a chance to win.
Gansebom got a great look at a shot from the short corner that bounced on the rim twice, an Osmond rebound and put back attempt by Erin Wagner wouldn't find the net as time expired.
Osmond lost the heartbreaker by a final score of 37-38. Despite the loss, Sophia Gansebom playing her last game on the home court put together a very solid performance leading the team with 11 points, completing the double-double with 10 rebounds, and grabbing 4 steals on the defensive end. The game closed a chapter for three Osmond seniors playing their final game on that floor. Sophia Gansebom, Erin Wagner, and the injured Keli Aschoff all have played important roles for this program throughout the years and left their mark in that gym.
