Lady Tigers travel to Winnebago, compete in Wausa tournament
Korrine Moes moves toward the basket in action last week

The Lady Tigers were busy last week, playing three games during that span. On Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Tigers faced off against the visiting Winnebago Indians. Friday, Jan. 10, saw the Tigers take on the Niobrara/ Verdigre Cougars in the Wausa Post-Holiday Tournament, and Saturday, Jan. 11, the next team up was the host team, the Wausa Vikings.

Tigers vs. Indians

WINNEBAGO — In the game against Winnebago, Osmond was able to use a solid start to get out in front early, leading 10-8 after the first quarter. Winnebago took the lead in the second quarter but an Erin Wagner buzzer beater cut the lead 20-21 going into the halftime break.

The third quarter was a good battle back and forth as neither team was really able to gain a lot of momentum and pull away from each other, however Winnebago was able to extend their lead 31-29 going into the final quarter.

Foul trouble for Osmond and good shooting by Winnebago proved too much in the final quarter of play, as Winnebago was able to extend their lead in the quarter to come away with a 46-38 victory.

Kaleigh Miller and Erin Wagner both dropped in 9 points each to lead the team in scoring. Sophia Gansebom was right behind, scoring 8 points but also grabbed a team high 11 rebounds.

Wausa Post-Holiday Tourney

WAUSA - In the first game of the Wausa Post-Holiday Tournament, the Lady Tigers took on the Lady Cougars of Niobrara/Verdigre. Osmond was struck with a cold night of shooting, especially in the first quarter.

Despite that, the Cougars had only built a 9-4 advantage after the first period of play. The Tigers were able to double their scoring in the second quarter as shots were starting to fall, but N/V had also added to their total as well to take a 20-12 lead going into halftime.

The third quarter would play out very similar to the first two, as N/V was able to score in double digits, and held the Tigers to only 6 points in the quarter, resulting in a 30-18 lead going into the final period. The fourth quarter saw the Tigers ramp up the defensive pressure and finally see more shots fall, as they were able to score 18 points in the quarter. Unfortunately it was a little too late as N/V would hang on to win the game 41-36.

Freshman Korrine Moes would lead the Tigers in scoring with 9 points.

Carrie Kumm and Kaleigh Miller both pulled down a team high 9 rebounds.

Aschoff 0 3 0 0 0 The very next day, the Tigers went back up to Wausa to take on the host team for their final game of the tournament. In back-to-back games, the cold shooting bug had bitten the Tigers early on as they were only able to score 4 points in the opening quarter.

Meanwhile, Wausa was able to net 11 points to win the quarter. The second quarter saw both teams scoring at a good pace. Wausa was able to slightly extend their lead in the quarter to take a 27-17 lead into halftime.

Osmond closed the gap in the third quarter, outscoring Wausa 11-8 to trail 35-28 going into the final quarter.

The Tigers were able to make the comeback, putting the score in a 36 all tie with three minutes remaining in the game.

At one point Osmond was down 32-18. A transition basket followed by a big three for Wausa stopped the momentum for Osmond and flipped it back to Wausa. Wausa would survive the fight from Osmond for a 45-39 win.

Sophia Gansebom would lead the Tigers in scoring with 15 points while shooting 43% from 3 in the game; she also recorded a team-high 4 blocks.

Kaleigh Miller pulled down a teamhigh 7 rebounds. Keli Aschoff was a thief, stealing the ball from Wausa 6 times.

Aschoff 3 5 3 2 0 Coach Bradley Wright commented, “Despite going 0-3 during the week, there's a lot of positives that need to be acknowledged for this team, starting with Tuesday against Winnebago.

The Tigers were able to compete against a decent C1 school that had lost to Class A South Sioux by only 4 points a few weeks ago. On Friday, against N/V, a team that had recently been to state and had current players that were significant players on their state tournament team and are a solid team yet this year, Osmond was able to score 18 points in a single quarter against them. On Saturday vs. Wausa, trailing at one point 32-18 in the game, they fought all the way back to tie it up at 36 late in the fourth quarter and fought until the final buzzer."

Osmond will have another busy week this week with three games scheduled. On Tuesday, the Tigers will host Newman Grove/St. Ed. On Thursday, the Tigers again will be the home team, this time facing off against Stuart (there will be no junior varsity game this night). And finally another Saturday game, this time traveling to Wakefield for an afternoon match up with the Trojans.
