1964: Liberty School closes its doors

Aug. 3, 1939

WAUSA — The Wausa Swedes defeated Laurel in the regular scheduled league game by the score of 7 to 4. Roy Carlson, Fox, Lingenfelter and Philips did the heavy stick work for Wausa. Speaking of baseball, we quote what the Hartington Herald has to say about Wausa baseball, “After one visits that city and sees the baseball enthusiasm there, they readily understand why Wausa ball clubs are feared and respected by all opponents.” Wausa is baseball minded.

Aug. 3, 1939

WAUSA — The Improvement Club will be hosting a chicken dinner with gravy and mashed potatoes at Gladstone park. Ladies would be invited to come with husbands and sweethearts. Aug. 3, 1939 WAUSA — A large number of ladies, including several from Bloomfield, dropped in at the Emil Johnson home south of Wausa on Monday afternoon, the occasion being the birthday of Mrs. Johnson. The afternoon was spent in a social manner and at an opportune time lunch which had been brought and prepared by the visitors was enjoyed. The visitors leaving for their respective homes extended congratulations and best wishes for many happy returns of the day.

WAUSA — Mr. and Mrs. George Nelson and children, Mr. and Mrs. Elon Thorell, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Peterson and son, Clark, attended the water carnival at Pierce last Sunday and enjoyed the day picnicking .

Aug. 6, 1964

WAUSA — Time marches on and in its wake leaves changes such as the reorganization and redistricting of schools the discontinuance of some and enlarging of others. This era of change is removing many landmarks, one of which is the disposal of the Liberty School 11 miles northeast of Wausa on Highway 84. This district has joined Bloomfield, Wausa, and Crofton school districts. The two story frame building will soon be offered for sale. Erected at the cost of $5800 in 1935, it served as a 10 grade school for four years, and then 12 grades until 1951 when the high school was abandoned. There were 64 graduated from the school. The alumni marked the passing of their school with a banquet. Among the local graduates attending were Don Wamberg, Loren Lind, James Wamberg, Charles and Don Wakely, Mr. and Mrs. Glendale McShannon and Mrs. Dale Albrecht.

Aug. 6, 1964

WAUSA — Wausa’s Swedes came through with wins over Creighton and Randolph, Tri-County league leaders in recent play and then dropped a game to Coleridge Tuesday night. Gordon Carlson led the hit parade with 3 safeties.

WAUSA — Iver Anderson won second place in the Hartington City Golf Tournament. The winner, Ed Zimmer of Hartington, finally bested Iver after 26 holes of play 2 up with one hole to play. Iver advanced to the finals by defeating Ab Mauch, Dr Vlach and Don High in close matches. A runner-up trophy of championship flight will be awarded to Iver at the annual Hartington Golf Club Dinner.

Aug. 6, 1989

WAUSA — Forty-three senior citizens enjoyed playing bingo at the Senior Center Monday, July 31. Winners of the special games were Russell Swanson, Elwin Banks, and Mabel Tangeman. The birthday song was sung to Gunnar Fink, Inez Moline, LaVern Reed, Ruth Bloomquist, Marian Rehan and Lola Thorell. Marian Carlson and Albertina Gruber furnished and served the cakes. Homer Anderson and Roy Carlson dished the ice cream, furnished by the Wausa Nursing Center.

WAUSA — The Wausa Community Club last week donated $250 to help finance the restoration of the tennis courts. The two courts next to the school were resurfaced last year. Total donations are now $5110 with $5500 needed to pay the remaining debt.

WAUSA — The Wausa 11-12 year olds recorded two big wins to claim the first place trophy at the Osmond Tournament . The championship went to the Vikes when they defeated a fine Hadar team 4-3. Travis Hageman, Jed Hageman, and Shane Anderson all did a superb job of pitching, keeping the game close and getting the big out when needed.

To the rest of the team, their good fielding plays kept runners from scoring. It was truly a championship game that will long be remembered.

Aug. 6, 1989

WAUSA — Randy and Beth Carlson and Gene and Valieda Burns were in charge of the lighted ball, couple’s night at Rolling Hills. The couples golfed in threesomes and had a shotgun tee off with 46 couples playing the one ball event.

Low score was won by John and Ruth Blankenship 57; Deb and Kenny Bloomquist, second lowest score, 59; Dave Kleinschmit and Stacy Young and Ray and Twila Lush least putts, 17; High score Ann and Dan Hoppe, 97. Guess your score, Mike and Joni Burns, Paul Bloomquist and Lynn Mills, and Dan and Bev Munter.
