1949: Wausa Swedes win in 12 inning game

WAUSA — A party was given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Erickson in honor of Marvin and Bernice Anderson who were visiting this community. The crowd consisted mostly of cousins of the guests of honor. Mrs. Erickson served some tasty refreshments.

WAUSA — A tourist collided with the county attorney W.D. Funk on West Broadway as the tourist made a u-turn pulling out of the Thoms Garage. The result was a bent front axle and fender on Funk’s car and the radiator on the tourist’s car smashed in. Garage men figured up the cost of repairs and Funk received $4.00 on the spot from the tourists.

WAUSA — The Albert Anderson, Rev. F. E. Anderson, Theo. Anderson, C.S. Erickson, C.A. Anderson, Walter Erickson, Rueben Erickson, Luther Erickson, and Rudolph Anderson families held a family reunion at the home of C.A. Anderson in the south part of town. Dinner was served buffet style while the evening meal was served in the shade of the trees on the lawn.

WAUSA — Rev. and Mrs. A.E. Olson and daughter Louise, left Tuesday for Madison, South Dakota, where they will spend two or three weeks at Lake Madison. Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Anderson, father and mother of Mrs. Olson accompanied them on their outing.

WAUSA — Editor C.A. Anderson who has been involved with the Gazette since the first paper came off the press in September 22, 1898 will retire Aug. 1. Mr. Anderson has served the community here since his purchase of the paper in 1901. His immediate plans call for complete retirement from the policy forming side of the Gazette; however, he will remain with the new owner and publisher as an advisor and handle much of the physical side of the business in the capacity of printer, the profession that first drew him into the newspaper business.

WAUSA — Miss Rose Swanson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ivar Swanson became the bride of Keith Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer E. Peterson at Thabor Lutheran Church on Friday, July 22. A seven pound baby boy was born Sunday morning to Mr. and Mrs. Don Pfeil at the Osmond Hospital. The infant will be named Mark Steven. A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Erickson.

WAUSA — Swedes take the Creighton Bulldogs in 2-0 twelve inning pitcher’s duel. Level headed pitching on the part of Dale Johnson and plenty of team work. In a nerve-racking nothing to nothing tie through the eleventh inning, the winning runs came in the first half of the twelfth when Elmer Johnson hit a home run and Ronnie Johnson followed him in after hitting a two bagger and advancing on a drive by Ronnie Johnson and a single by Swanson. Two strikeouts and a putout ended Creighton’s hopes in the twelfth.

WAUSA — Mark Pfeil, son of Mr. an Mrs. Don Pfeil returned Sunday night from Valley Forge, PA where he attended the Sixth International Jamboree of the Boy Scouts of America. He was accompanied by Keun Sung Koh of Chongo-Ku, Seoul, Korea who is a guest in the Pfeil home this week.

WAUSA — Wausa swim team drops meet to Wayne. The top scorers of the evening were Ronnie Nelson of Wausa and Judy Jones of Wayne. Both scored 20 points each in the individual events. Wausa scored heavily in the backstroke and the breaststroke. Laura Nelson, John Olson, and Beth Skalberg all received first places in the back stroke, while Ronnie Nelson, Patsy Erickson and Laura Nelson came in first in their age groups of the breast stroke. The meet wrapped up with a final score of Wayne 164 and Wausa 119.
August 1, 1974
WAUSA — A group of neighbors and relatives helped with the oats harvest this past week on the Roy Carlson farm. The week before they had helped with the hay. Those helping were Dean Cunningham and sons, Fred Whaley, Curt Whaley, Dalton Gillilan, Lloyd Erickson, Myles Elsberry, Audie Elsberry, Ronald Syles, Warren Nelson, David Nelson, Harvey Langemeier, Boyd Cunningham, Tom Cummingham, Delmar Greeno, Floyd Thorell, Jr., Bill Thorell, Roger Thorell and Wilmer Monson. Assisting in the kitchen were Mrs. Wilmer Monson, Mrs. Dean Cunningham, Mrs. Fred Whaley and Kimberly.

WAUSA — The Pioneer Softball league tournament is underway this week at Wausa. Wausa and Bloomfield are the only two teams so far who have not suffered a defeat in the Double Elimination Tourney. In Wausa vs Osmond, Wausa dropped Osmond in the first round 7 to 3. Don Erickson had a homer and a single.

WAUSA — Covering the bare surface of Nebraska Highway 121 from Wausa south with seven inches of black asphalt concrete coulees start September 1 according to Lyle Leader, project manager for the Department of Roads. Leader estimated the NE 121 project here will be completed, including seeding and opened by Oct. 15.
