As I was working on the Bygone Years column these past couple of weeks, I was reading about winter storms that occurred during the winter of 1948-49, 75 years ago. I couldn’t help but think about that as the community, and the state, dealt with the winter storms that occurred this past week.
It isn’t often that we have back-to-back winter storms of this kind. Just as we got dug out of the snow that fell last Monday and Tuesday, the temperatures dropped drastically and another winter storm started brewing.
Then the Winter Storm Warning that initially was supposed to go through Friday ended up being extended to Saturday night. And even through Tuesday, the Wind Chill Warning continued and roads were still blocked.
Through it all, the city crew was working, trying to clear the streets. Not only that, but neighbors and friends have come to the assistance of those who needed help digging out.
Hopefully, this is not a trend and we don’t see something like what occurred during the winter of 1948-49. That being said, can anyone who was around at that time remember that winter and share your stories?
Stay safe, everyone, and stay warm!
