CENTER – Knox County considers the 2024 edition of its scrap tire collection event as a success.
More than 135 tons of scrap tires were collected on June 19 at the Center County Yard on the south edge of the community of Center. The event’s limit was 150 tons.
A $26,288 grant Knox County received from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Fund was for the collection of up to 150 tons.
The grant paid for a hauler to pick up the scrap tires as well as a portion of advertising and labor costs associated with the collection event.
Butler County Landfill Inc., David City, hauled the scrap tires to its site to be shredded and used for alternative daily cover of its landfill.
The 2025 NDEE grant process will be held June 26-Aug. 7 and an application will be submitted for Knox County to receive state funds for another collection event next year.
