NIOBRARA – The Knox County Sheriff’s Office received a report at about 12:30 a.m., June 19, of a one-vehicle crash that occurred on Highway 12 between 526th and 528th Avenues, just east of Niobrara.
The investigation revealed Mariah Mace, 28, Pierce, was operating a motor vehicle east on Highway 12 when a deer ran into the road. Mace stated she swerved, but the vehicle struck the deer and the guardrail on the south side of the road.
Mace was transported by Niobrara Ambulance to Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, S.D., for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff’s office. Two dogs were found inside the vehicle, but they were uninjured and turned over to the vehicle’s co-owner.
Mace was found to not have an active driver’s license and was cited and released, according to the sheriff’s office. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damages.
