Knox County to host scrap tire collection event June 19

CENTER – Knox County is once again asking residents to get their scrap tires ready.

CENTER – Knox County is once again asking residents to get their scrap tires ready.

The county has scheduled the 2024 edition of its scrap tire collection event from 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. June 19, though it could be over sooner if the limit of 150 tons is reached.

The site will be the Center County Yard, located along Highway 84 on the south edge of the community of Center.

There will be no personal limits at this collection event; however, the collection will be on a first-come, first-served basis until the limit is met.

People are encouraged after 11 a.m. June 19 to call ahead to Deputy Knox County Clerk Krista Nix at 402-360-1531 if they have a large load of scrap tires as the limit may have been met by then.

The county received a $26,288 grant from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy’s Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Fund that pays for a hauler to pick up the scrap tires as well as a portion of advertising and labor costs associated with the collection event.

Butler County Landfill Inc., David City, will haul the scrap tires to its site to be shredded and used for alternative daily cover of its landfill. The collection event is limited to Knox County residents only. No dealers or those who collect a tire disposal fee will be allowed to participate. Sign-in will take place at the gate and those bringing in tires will be asked to sign their names as well as provide their telephone number, the number of scrap tires they have brought and where they came from (for example, a farm).

This information is needed as part of the grant requirements as well as it helps with the estimated weight of scrap tires being collected.

Estimated tire weights are: car/light pickup tires, 20 pounds; truck tires, 100 pounds; and rear tractor tires, 300 pounds.

Also, the scrap tires must be removed from rims, and floater or large construction tires will not be accepted. No early dropoff of tires will be allowed either.

People are asked to call Nix at 402-288-5604 or 402-360-1531 or email clerk@knoxcountyne. gov if they have any questions before the collection event.
