NORFOLK — The Norfolk Classic was held on Wednesday, April 24,, a day earlier than scheduled because of a forecast of poor weather conditions on Thursday. The best athletes from the area came to the Norfolk Track & Field Complex to compete for the top spot in each event.

Osmond senior Xander Brown competed in the discus and Dominic True in the 1,600 meters. Dominic had also qualified in the 3,200 meters, but

due to the limited recovery time, just ran the 1,600 meters.

The discus was one of the first field events to compete. Of the eight throwers, Xander was third from last, meaning he had the third best distance entering the meet. His first two attempts were both over 150 feet; the best of the day was 156 ft., 3 in., which earned him fourth place.

After struggling early, Ainsworth’s Carter Nelson won with a throw of 177 ft., 2 in., followed by Trent Uhlir of Battle Creek at 174 ft., 0 in., and Samuel Zazueta of Norfolk High with a distance of 173 ft., 11 in.

Later on the track, Dominic True stepped to the starting line for the 1,600 meters. He had the 11th best time coming into the race. Dominic had a strong start, running with the lead pack until Norfolk High star Isaac Ochoa pulled away from everyone.

On the last lap, Dominic was closing on the Boyd County runner, Will Nelson, but couldn’t quite catch him.

The senior Tiger’s time was 5:00.12 and placed him eighth overall. The winning time was 4:20.68.

“I was very pleased with the work Xander and Dominic did at this quality meet,” praised Coach Joe Ortmeier.

“Just getting invited is an honor and performing at a high level as they did is outstanding!”
