Track teams compete at Hartington, Pierce

HARTINGTON – The Wildcat invitational was held on Monday, April 15, at the Hartington Sports Complex. The meet time was moved up an hour due to forecast of early evening storms. The temperature was warm, but strong winds really challenged the athletes.

HARTINGTON – The Wildcat invitational was held on Monday, April 15, at the Hartington Sports Complex. The meet time was moved up an hour due to forecast of early evening storms. The temperature was warm, but strong winds really challenged the athletes.

The Osmond Tigers had three gold medal performances. Dominic True won both the 3,200 and 1,600 meters and the boy’s 3,200-relay team held off Wausa for the win. The wind was very tough on the longer distance runners, but Dominic ran strong into the breeze and was clocked at 5:06.10 in the 1,600 meters and 11:20.65 in the 3,200 meters. The 3,200-relay team of Jaxon Vinson, Caleb Vinson, Matthew Alderson, and Dominic True won the eight lap race in a time of 9:20.05.

The boys also had a number of silver medal efforts starting in the field events. Senior Xander Brown was second in the discus with a very good effort of 159 ft. 4 in. It was one of the best throws ever by a Tiger thrower, but second to Ainsworth’s Carter Nelson who hit 188 ft. 1 in. In the long jump, Hunter Buchanan equaled his best distance of 20 ft. 2 in. for his runner-up finish behind Hartington’s Cole Roseners mark of 21 ft., 1 in.

On the track Hunter took second place in the 100 meters to Carter Nelson of Ainsworth. Hunter’s time was 11.65 to Nelson’s 11.03. Hunter was also fifth in the 200 meters in a time of 25.01.

Jaxon Vinson placed fifth in the 800 meters in 2:23.94. Noah Geneski finished fifth in the 100 high hurdles in a time of 18.65 and Owen Severson took fifth place in the 300 hurdles in his best time of the year of 47.31.

The 400- relay team finished runner-up to Bloomfield. The team of Noah Geneski, Xander Brown, James Doyle, and Hunter Buchanan covered the one lap race in 47.09 behind the Bee’s time of 46.42. Finally the 1,600-relay team of Owen Severson, Mason True, Jaxon Vinson and Noah Geneski placed fifth in a time of 4:06.12.

For the Tiger girls, a fourth place finish by the 1,600-relay team was their top performance. The team of Anabelle Vinson, Keli Aschoff, Charley Aschoff, and Abby Brown were clocked at 5:08.87.

Senior Erica Heiman finished fifth in both the 100 and 300 hurdles. Her time in the 100 hurdles was 18.41 and in the 300 hurdles 55.92. Keli Aschoff placed sixth in the 1600 meters in a time of 7:00.30.

“I felt we performed well in the windy conditions with quite a few improvements in the field and on the track. We had a lot of runners at seventh and eighth place, just out of the medals,” noted Coach Joe Ortmeier.

Tom Martin Memorial/ Wausa invitational

On Thursday, April 18, the Osmond track teams traveled to Pierce for their Tom Martin Memorial/Wausa invitational. Temperatures were cool and breezy and the competition was very strong with solid area track programs.

The Tigers did have a gold medal winner in the discus. Xander Brown was in second place behind Ren Brown of Stanton. Xander took the lead on his second attempt in the finals measuring 155 ft., 6 in., one foot better than the Stanton Mustang.

Both throwers scratched on their final attempts. Xander also placed sixth in the shot with a toss of 42 ft., 10 in.

In the long jump, Hunter Buchanan placed fourth with a leap of 20 ft., 0.75 in., just .75 behind Keenan Valverde of Pierce. Hunter also collected fifth place in the 100 meters in a time of 11.79.

Also collecting a pair of medals was Dominic True in the 3,200 and 1,600 meters. Dominic finished fourth in the 1,600 meters in a time of 5:07.65, and fifth in the 3,200 meters in 11:08.52.

James Doyle placed sixth in the 400 meters in his best time of this season of 56.79. Noah Geneski made the finals of the 110 high hurdles, but did not place.

The 3,200-relay team of Jaxon Vinson, Caleb Vinson, Matthew Al- derson, and Dominic True finished in fourth place behind Pierce, Hartington CC, and Norfolk Catholic. The Tigers time was 9:12.78, their fastest so far this season. Pierce ran 8:49.66 for first place.

The 400-relay team finished fifth with a time of 47.44. Team members were Noah Geneski, Xander Brown, James Doyle, and Hunter Buchanan. Norfolk Catholic won the race in 45.24.

“This was very competitive meet,” noted Coach Ortmeier, “one of our main goals was to work hard and better our times and distances - a personal best. We had many personal bests on the day; some just didn’t score or get into the finals. Our girls were close, but didn’t score.”
