The Pierce County Republican party met Tuesday, April 2, at the Lied Pierce Public Library. Chairman Bradley Lewon called the meeting to order and led the group in prayer, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Lewon reported that, according to Steve Jessen of Nebraska’s proposed EPIC Option, Pierce County has 490 of its 600-signature goal in the petition drive to place the measure on the ballot. Lewon also announced a Candidates Forum for the upcoming primary election. The forum was held in Norfolk on Monday, April 8.

The remainder of the meeting was reserved for presentations by political candidates. Jeanne Reigle, running for District 19 in the Nebraska Unicameral, shared her stances on a variety of local issues from property tax relief to education, emphasizing the need for accountability in spending. She listed economic development in rural communities as a priority should she be elected.

Following questions for Mrs. Reigle, John Walz, candidate for U.S. House of Representatives, presented his platform. Walz emphasized that the role of government was the protection of liberties and the need to end unconstitutional spending. Walz believes churches could exercise huge muscle to impact decision-making at the federal level.

At the conclusion of Mr. Walz’s presentation, a motion was passed to endorse both Jeanne Reigle and John Walz in their respective candidacies.

Prior to adjournment, members were reminded of the short time left in the legislative session and to voice their concerns to their representatives.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, May 7, at the Lied Pierce library. Of importance to that meeting will be preparing county delegates to represent the group at the Nebraska State GOP Convention May 18-19.
